The Brooklyn Bee Experience

In keeping with the local foods movement, rooftop farming has become a growing trend in Brooklyn, with beekeepers leading the way. We invite you to experience rooftop beekeeping with John Howe, one of the initiators of the urban beekeeping trend and the subject of the documentary Rooftop Bees

Your private experience will begin with a little background on beekeeping and the process of maintaining hives. John will explain how urban beekeeping emerged from an underground practice to a legal business that is now competitive in the local foods market.

As part of this rare introduction, you’ll get a chance to look at an “observation hive,” where bees are kept behind glass so that you can observe their “dance” up close.  You’ll then follow John to the rooftop and join him in inspecting two actual hives and identifying the queen bee and larvae—key players in this complex and mysterious ecosystem!  Finish off the experience with the drinking of mead (honey wine) and, of course, a jar of Brooklyn rooftop honey to take home!
